Rocky island outcrop with a cross against the blue sky at Lake Ilopango

Most people see it from the overlook. You'll see it from 60 feet down.

Lago de Ilopango fills the caldera of one of the largest eruptions of the last 2,000 years, and the volcano isn't finished. You descend through open water past dark volcanic rock to statues local divers placed on the bottom, then to vents where heat still pushes up out of the earth. Hold your hand near the rock and you can feel it. You won't find a reef fish parade here, and we won't pretend you will. What you get is stranger and rarer.

Volcano FAQ

Is it safe to dive in a volcano?

Yes. The volcano is the adventure, not the danger. Before every dive you get a full briefing on the route, depth limits and what to do if anything changes. If conditions aren't right, we don't go, and you choose a new date or a full refund. See our Booking Policy.

What are the underwater statues at Lake Ilopango?

Local divers have placed statues at sites like Los Quemados and Cerro Encantado over the years, including a replica of Christ the Redeemer, the Virgin of Dolores and a giant rosary. They double as landmarks on our guided dives.

Will I see the heat vents?

On most days, yes. Your Divemaster or Instructor plans the route on the day based on conditions and your certification.
